Pleiades

On the way back to Salt Lake from Ouray, Jen and I stopped in Moab for a couple days to enjoy some desert sun and dry out our perpetually wet van. Above town, up in the La Sal mountains, is a short slot canyon that occasionally freezes in the winter. So, you rap in from the top, and then climb back out from the bottom.

It ended up being pretty fun. It wasn’t particularly good or hard ice climbing at any point, but it’s always super interesting to adventure your way up a slot canyon when it’s frozen solid. I wouldn’t drive all the way down to Moab to do this climb, but if you happen to be in the area and happen to have ice gear, it’s worth the side trip.

Jen rapping into Pleiades (WI3)
There were tons of small steps like this.
Dropping from the daylight.
Coming down the top of the last pitch, and into the sun for just a minute.
Heading up.
Jen on the sunny bottom pitch.
Finding clean ice in the middle.
Into the drytooling.
Jen following the crux pitch.
Topping out.
Leading back into the sun.
