Europe / Part 3 – Arco, Italy

    2016-07-12

After Jasmin’s crash, we started to work our way toward her home in Austria. Our original game plan had us spending a couple days riding bikes in Arco, but that was all up in the air depending on how well Jasmin got along living out of the car.

It turns out that our decision would be made for us as the sky opened and rained as hard as anything I’ve ever experienced (and I’m from Washington). Jen and I woke up in the middle of the night to find that our tent was in the middle of a lake, but we managed to use a lull in the downpour to move the whole thing to the only spot of high ground within 50 yards. With everything completely soaked in the morning and Jasmin having a less-than-awesome time sleeping in a car with her arm in a sling, we decided to keep heading North.

Arco itself is amazing. It’s exactly the kind of old city with narrow cobble streets that you picture when you think of Italy. As you walk through the streets, it becomes immediately obvious that about every third store is full of climbing gear. It absolutely killed me to not have shoes and a harness in the car. From camp (or anywhere, for that matter) we could see massive limestone cliffs towering above us. I can’t wait to come back.
