The Apron

If I’m being honest, I usually avoid the Apron at all cost. The combination of multiple moderate classics that all feed from a couple entry pitches lead to next-level traffic jams that I’m just not willing to deal with on a regular basis. But, every once in a while it’s worth it to roll the dice on getting stuck in the traffic jam for a (hopefully) quick lap.

On this occasion, Jen and I decided to risk it on St Vitus Dance (5.8) and came up with a bit of luck. The one group in front of us headed up something else, and we didn’t catch the next group above them until we were high enough that it didn’t matter.

I had never done this route before, and it definitely lived up to the hype (as all the classics up here seem to do). Nearly all of the pitches were excellent, the belay stances were good, the rock was great, and the views, as always, were incredible. We finished up with two extra pitches at the top to round out a super fun half-day outing. Then it was back to the lake to cool off again, which has become the standard afternoon practice.
